This project aims to offer a portrait of civic life by presenting the written observations of the 2018 Central Park Squirrel Census through a geographically-based "found poetry engine." It is hoped that the tone of these anonymous reflections, dutifully recorded by the volunteer census takers with a fair dollop of whimsy, will invite the user to imagine positive recollections of nature, community, and Central Park itself.
How I Started
Squirrel Tales brings NYC Open Data's archival notes of the 2018 Central Park Squirrel Census to life. Census taker stories from a JSON set of ~800 records are accessible via an interactive layer that fits snugly atop the original engraving of the census map. Click "Fetch a story" to get started.
How I Built This
This web app was built as a portfolio piece for Unit 1 of General Assembly’s Software Engineering Immersive. It is hand-coded in HTML, CSS, and Javascript. The Open Data NYC API is tapped for data with axios.
